QUESTION / ANSWER

How does Navimail work ?

Navimail can be used with any telecom system that accepts e-mail : Inmarsat all standards, Iridium, GSM, BLU, Internet …
Both orders and deliveries are send by e-mail. You have to use the same e-mail address both to order and to receive, and it must be the address you registered by opening your account at Météo-France (see below if you need to have one).

Navimail is able to work with almost all mailing systems, although it was thought to be first fit for Outlook, Netscape and Skyfile. Delivered files appear as attached documents.

There is no subscription’s fee to use Navimail. You may download freely the software (and look at its menus). Only the orders will be billed. So, before ordering, you must be in one of the two following cases :

• If you use to order an address as “my.boat@inmarsat.francetelecom.fr” or a Skyfile address, you will be billed of the whole order by France Telecom with your usual France Telecom bill. So you have nothing to do.
Please note : If you have Skyfile or Skyfile Météo, do not forget to ask to your operator for Telecom - France Telecom, TDCOM, - your Skyfile address and to register your number IMN of recording.

• In any other case, you have to open an account at Météo-France and put money onto it before ordering. If you subscribe a private account (for private needs), click on “Vous êtes un particulier” , if you’re opening an account for your company, click on “Vous êtes une entreprise”. After having opened it, with your customer number and your password, you will be allowed to access to your account, to update it (for example, to change your usual e-mail address) and to put credit onto it. Your account is automatically billed of the amounts of the meteorological products of yours orders. Transmission’s costs are billed by your telecommunication’s operator.
Account

Your credit is registered by points (one point = 1/10 euro). You must buy at least 150 points (15 euros) at once.

• Security bulletins, observed satellite pictures and short-range préisos (observed and forecasted pressure charts) are freely delivered by Météo-France (i.e with only transmission’s cost).

Please note that “In no case, weather informations by e-mail can take place of watching carefully the GMDSS security bulletins (broadcasted by Cross on VHF and SSB, Navtex or Inmarsat-C)”.

Navimail’s orders, automatically managed, must be coded in a precise way. The interface is freely given by Météo-France , you must pay only before ordering . This interface allow you to make your order by seeing its estimated cost (Estimated telecommunication costs do not include dial-in time and are based on peak-time prices).
First Download

Charts are in GRIB format (translated in mime (base64) for the mail, it’s usually fit for every standard).
If you have a software able to visualize GRIB files (Maxsea, Seapro, Raytech, …), click on it to download Navimail fit for it.
If you haven’t any one, Météo-France also give you one freely : download the Maxsea Navimail pack.
